The Caylee Anthony homicide trial is underway nearly three years after the then-two-year-old was reported missing.Casey Anthony, Caylee’s mother, will stand trial Tuesday for killing her daughter. Casey faces other charges as well, including aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child and providing false information to authorities. Casey has pleaded not guilty and denies harming Caylee.
A conviction by jurors could mean the death penalty for Casey.Caylee was last seen June 16, 2008.
Her skeletal remains were found six months later in a wooded area about a quarter of a mile from her grandparent’s home. Cindy Anthony, Caylee’s grandmother, made two calls to 911 -- the first to report that her granddaugther had been missing for a month and the second to tell officers that she found her daughter’s car and it smelled as though there was a dead body inside, according to an article published on CNN’s website.
Caylee’s death was ruled a homicide by undetermined means -- meaning there is no cause of death, correspondent Jean Casarez told CNN. "One of the elements in the statute for murder is that the defendant caused the death," Casarez said." The case is circumstantial, so prosecutors don’t have a definitive cause of death yet, Casarez added.
